Creation: Created on the 27 of August, 1991 when Bendel State was split into Edo and Delta States.
Capital: Benin City.
Major Cities: Benin, Auchi, Ekpoma, Uromi, Fugar, Agenebode, Okada, Sabongida Ora.
Geographical Profile: Lying on 05 44 N and 07 34 N latitudes, 05 4 E and 06 45 E longitudes; The State has a land mass of 19,794 km square. Edo State is low lying except towards the north axis where the Northern and Esan plateaus range from 183 meters of the Kukuruku Hills and 672 meters of the Somorika Hills.
Economic Profile: The State produces crude oil. It is also noted for the following agricultural products: rubber, cocoa, cashew nuts and is blessed with precious stones like Quartz, Amethyst, Mica, Dolomite, Granite Stone and Lime Stone used in the production of Cement.
Tourism is also a thriving industry in Edo. Attractions in Edo State include the Emotan statue in Benin City, Ise Lake and River Niger beach in Agenebode, Etsako-East; Ambrose Alli Square, Ekpoma and River Niger beaches at Ilushi.
Occupation: Agriculture is the predominant occupation of people in this State. The major cash crops produced are rubber, cocoa and palm produce. In addition, the State produces such crops as yams, cassava; rice, plantains, guinea-corn, and assorted types of fruits and vegetables
Ethnic Profile: The major tribal languages spoken in the state are Bini, Igarra, Esan and Okpamheri. The official language is English. Edo State is home to several ethnicities, among them are the Binis, Okpe, Esan, Afemai, Ora, Akoko-Edo, Igbanke, Emai and Ijaw.
